Overview
In response to the far-reaching educational impacts of COVID-19, the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) sought a comprehensive data intelligence platform to inform decision-making and drive equitable resource allocation.
IHI led the UX strategy and technical design for LACOE's Covid Impact BI Dashboard, now branded as EduLens. This interactive platform delivers AI-powered data insights, geospatial analytics, and role-based personalization, empowering educators, administrators, policymakers, and the public to make informed, data-backed decisions.
Challenge
LACOE faced several challenges in tracking and responding to the pandemic’s educational effects:
- Fragmented Data Sources: Key metrics—academic performance, DEI factors, community health risks—existed in disconnected systems.
- Lack of Data-Driven Decision Support: Educators and policymakers needed a centralized tool to translate raw data into actionable insights.
- Inconsistent Access to Information: Different stakeholders required customized views, but existing solutions lacked role-based personalization.
- Limited Usability & Adoption: Without a human-centered design approach, dashboards often failed to engage and empower users.
Solution
IHI designed and implemented EduLens, a next-generation data intelligence and AI-powered decision support system tailored for LACOE’s leadership and education stakeholders.
Key Features Implemented:
- Multi-Domain Data Aggregation – Centralized academic, DEI, and community impact metrics into a single analytics ecosystem.
- Interactive Data Visualization Dashboards – Designed intuitive, real-time dashboards for district-wide performance tracking.
- Geospatial Mapping with Layered Insights – Enabled users to correlate student outcomes with community factors (e.g., crime rates, air quality, COVID-19 cases).
- Conversational AI Chatbot for Role-Based Personalization – Developed an AI-powered assistant to deliver contextualized, literacy-adaptive insights based on user roles (Parents, Educators, Administrators, Researchers, Public Officials, and Analysts).
- AI-Driven Predictive Modeling – Provided trend forecasting and what-if scenario planning for proactive decision-making.
Outcome
The launch of EduLens transformed LACOE’s data intelligence capabilities, delivering tangible benefits:
- Increased data-driven decision-making adoption across school districts and leadership teams.
- 40% reduction in reporting inefficiencies, streamlining access to critical education impact data.
- Personalized AI chatbot engagement, improving information accessibility across multiple literacy levels.
- Improved resource allocation through AI-powered trend analysis and geospatial insights.
